The Most Obvious Way to Eat Healthy - Sponsored Post

Today I’m writing a sponsored post answering the following question: It’s hard to eat right and get your recommended daily allowance of fruits and vegetables. How does your family do it? (Mind you, my “family” consists of me my fiance, Ben.)
Ben and I started cooking this year, and by “cooking,” I mean I drink wine and ask if there’s anything I can do to help while he grills. Grilling is the extent of our cooking. And the occasional huge salad. This may not sound impressive, but nothing compares to grilled vegetables seasoned with olive oil, salt and vinegar, or a salad with “everything” in it (vegetables, nuts, hard boiled eggs, etc). A friend of mine recently told me that seasonal fruit and vegetables help fight seasonal colds and illnesses. I’ve never read anything about that, but it makes sense. Nature often works in obvious ways. I used to go to the market with something specific in mind but now I accommodate the produce. Lately I’ve bought things like red chard, kale, corn, cherries and peaches just because they were there. The kale was especially intimidating. It was like green leaf lettuce with attitude. But it took moments to steam and made for a great side dish with a little bit of garlic and lemon juice. When you have great ingredients, the meal really does make itself.
We’ve also gotten better about snacking on fruit instead of the incredibly addictive cheesy poofs they sell at Trader Joe’s. The key is to keep things like grapes and cherries in bowls on the kitchen counter. I’m into rice cakes again too. I go through phases, but I find that sometimes I crave the crunch even more than the food itself.
Also, here are two appliances I recommend buying:
1. A cheap, easy to clean juicer.
2. A grill basket if you have a grill. That way there will be no asparagus left behind.
In closing, if we can eat healthy at home with our limited patience and below average cooking skill, anyone can.
