First World Feminism
What's the point of this website?

A fair question. Two quick answers:

1. Those of us lucky enough to live in the most progressive parts of the world tend to focus on how good we have it, and yet we still haven’t achieved true gender equality.

2. I’m over trying to pitch women’s magazines. If the story isn’t about slimmer thighs for summer, they’re just not interested.

This stuff is important, I’ll try not to make it too dry.

Counteracting Anti-Choice Propaganda

Stony Brook University graduate Meghan Shalvoy and the Stony Brook Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance put together a fact sheet to counteract anti-choice propaganda on campus. This is a good resource for anyone who encounters lies and misinformation about abortion.

Facts include:

  • About half of American women have experienced an unintended pregnancy, and at current rates more than one-third (35%) will have had an abortion by age 45.
  • 60% of women having abortions already have children.
  • Nine in 10 abortions occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
  • The National Cancer Institute (2003), American Cancer Society (2008), and the Journal of the American Medical Association (2003) have all published conclusions stating that “having an abortion or miscarriage does not increase a woman’s subsequent risk of developing breast cancer,” (National Cancer Institute, 2003).
  • The “post-abortion traumatic stress syndrome” that abortion foes claim is widespread is not recognized by either the APA or the American Psychiatric Association.
  • In a recent study by the World Health Organization, “of the approximately 600,000 pregnancy-related deaths occurring annually around the world, 80,000 [or 13%] are associated with unsafe abortions.”
