First World Feminism
What's the point of this website?

A fair question. Two quick answers:

1. Those of us lucky enough to live in the most progressive parts of the world tend to focus on how good we have it, and yet we still haven’t achieved true gender equality.

2. I’m over trying to pitch women’s magazines. If the story isn’t about slimmer thighs for summer, they’re just not interested.

This stuff is important, I’ll try not to make it too dry.

How Religion Harms Women

Thank you New York Times’ Nicholas D. Kristof, once again, for being one of the few sane voices in an insane world.

In his column yesterday, Kristof explained how religions that dictate that women are inferior human beings in the eyes of God (i.e. - almost all of the major ones) lead to the legal, academic and physical subjugation of women.

That’s a pretty serious global problem, considering the number of people that identify with one of the major religions.

But there is a microscopic glimmer of hope. Kristof writes, “while religion is part of the problem, it can also be part of the solution. The Dalai Lama has taken that step and calls himself a feminist.”

The importance of religious leaders simply mentioning that they’re feminists cannot be overstated. Here’s hoping that all of them follow the Dalai Lama’s lead.
