First World Feminism
What's the point of this website?

A fair question. Two quick answers:

1. Those of us lucky enough to live in the most progressive parts of the world tend to focus on how good we have it, and yet we still haven’t achieved true gender equality.

2. I’m over trying to pitch women’s magazines. If the story isn’t about slimmer thighs for summer, they’re just not interested.

This stuff is important, I’ll try not to make it too dry.

More on “New Moon”

“New Moon” has been a trending topic on Twitter for days. This means that people around the world have been writing thousands of tweets about it per hour, every hour, for days.

The tweets say things like:

@Trumarine: I’m going to see New Moon tonight!! Woot Woot!! Half nekkid Rob here I cum!!!!

@bellie7: Still thinking about Jacobs abs in New Moon. *fanning face*

@XlilmissrandomX: me and han are still making disagreemens over new moon !! , team JOCOB , for mee !!!! :D . edwards body is the dissapointment :(

LilyStarcob: I JUST HAVE TO TWEET THIS NOW!!! U ALL MUST C NEW MOON!!!SO CUTE AND SWEET AND OOOOH. just OOOHHH . amazing JACOB IS SOOOO DAMN FUCKIN HOT

In “New Moon,” the less attractive guy from the first movie (Jacob) works out like crazy and shows up cut in the second movie. Then he runs around with his shirt off the whole time. I love the scenes where Bella looks at him like, “I did tell Edward I’d sell my eternal soul to be with him, but you have really nice abs …”

I don’t think an ideal world is one where Hollywood makes adolescent boys feel just as inadequate as adolescent girls. But maybe if boys experience the other side of objectification, they’ll think twice when they see it done it to women.

For the record, I’m on Team Edward because he’s tall, pale, reads lots of books, can’t sleep or eat, doesn’t think he deserves to be happy, avoids intimacy and generally reminds me of the men I date. And yes, I did see both Twilight movies and really liked them. I don’t know what that says about me as a feminist or as a critical consumer of culture.

Here’s a blogger’s two cents on why “New Moon” is actually a sexist movie.
