First World Feminism
What's the point of this website?

A fair question. Two quick answers:

1. Those of us lucky enough to live in the most progressive parts of the world tend to focus on how good we have it, and yet we still haven’t achieved true gender equality.

2. I’m over trying to pitch women’s magazines. If the story isn’t about slimmer thighs for summer, they’re just not interested.

This stuff is important, I’ll try not to make it too dry.

Happy Thanksgiving!

What I’m thankful for:

  • Feminist 12 year-olds
  • Living in New York City among the homo, commi liberals
  • Best friends who I’ve known longer than I haven’t
  • “A walk on part in a war” vs. “A lead role in a cage”
  • Feminists twitterers
  • Breast cancer survivors who show us what human perseverance is all about
  • Aggressive, Type A guys who prefer aggressive, Type A girls
  • The people who already do what I’m trying to do, better, more passionately, and for more of their lives
  • The sky’s the limit, Gen-Y fearlessness of the Young Feminist Task Force
  • Schoolteachers who don’t get enough money or respect, but still wake up and do it all over again the next day
  • Men who write and speak sensitively and intelligently about women’s issues
  • Living in a country that elected Barack Obama and gained Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. A country that is still pro-choice, that watches Ellen and downloads Adam Lambert, and increasingly gets its news from The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.
  • Chocolate, sunsets, dark humor
  • People I haven’t seen in years who tell me that they read this blog and that they’re glad I write it
