First World Feminism
What's the point of this website?

A fair question. Two quick answers:

1. Those of us lucky enough to live in the most progressive parts of the world tend to focus on how good we have it, and yet we still haven’t achieved true gender equality.

2. I’m over trying to pitch women’s magazines. If the story isn’t about slimmer thighs for summer, they’re just not interested.

This stuff is important, I’ll try not to make it too dry.

The Importance of Paid Sick Days

On Tuesday I stood on the steps of New York City’s City Hall with National NOW’s Young Feminist Task Force at a rally for a paid sick days bill. I got to meet Gloria Steinem, who spoke in favor of the bill, along with elected officials, and workers who currently don’t have sick days. Women are more affected by the lack of sick days than men because they are the ones who so often deal with their family’s health needs. But in addition to this being a woman’s issue, it is also a public health issue, as H1N1 in on the rise and American workers without sick days will be forced to come into work and infect coworkers and patrons.
