First World Feminism
What's the point of this website?

A fair question. Two quick answers:

1. Those of us lucky enough to live in the most progressive parts of the world tend to focus on how good we have it, and yet we still haven’t achieved true gender equality.

2. I’m over trying to pitch women’s magazines. If the story isn’t about slimmer thighs for summer, they’re just not interested.

This stuff is important, I’ll try not to make it too dry.

Abortion and the Health Care Bill

If you’re pro-choice, I would encourage you to send this virtual letter to President Obama (I never get tired of the sound of that) urging him to include abortion care and comprehensive reproductive health care in his health care reform plan.

The bill that the House passed on Saturday includes a ban on private abortion coverage and would prohibit it in the new “public option.” As The Washington Post reports, “the amendment goes beyond long-standing prohibitions against public funding for abortions, limiting abortion coverage even for women paying for it without government subsidies.”

I almost didn’t send this message to Obama because I’m not a big letter to the president writer. But then I remembered that this is a really important issue and I rewrote it in my own words and hit “Submit.”
