First World Feminism
What's the point of this website?

A fair question. Two quick answers:

1. Those of us lucky enough to live in the most progressive parts of the world tend to focus on how good we have it, and yet we still haven’t achieved true gender equality.

2. I’m over trying to pitch women’s magazines. If the story isn’t about slimmer thighs for summer, they’re just not interested.

This stuff is important, I’ll try not to make it too dry.

Is Gossip Girl a Feminist Show?

I can’t decide whether or not Gossip Girl is a feminist show. I think on balance it is, but one could make arguments in both directions:

Why it is:

  • Rufus is a total type-B caretaker who is a very appealing character. He is a parental figure not only to his own kids but also to Lily’s.
  • Lily is successfully running the Bass corporation and there’s no discussion around it.
  • Blair is professionally and personally assertive and she’s arguably the most desirable female character on the show.
  • Serena and Blair are as aggressively into sex as the guys.

Why it’s not:

  • Blair caves when it comes to Chuck (just last night she gifted him the Southeby’s photo even though she wanted it as badly as he did).
  • Dorota, Blair’s slave housekeeper, is a woman.
  • Blair’s mother is the stereotypical bad mom career woman.
  • Serena is a much more apologetic badass than Chuck, presumably because it’s unladylike for women to be badasses.
